Every New Year Resolution Season I think of the classic Dr Seuss book Oh, The Places You'll Go. I have to believe it to be one of the most beloved books by people fixated with the unknown, those searching for adventure every time they step outside. And especially for those who get to that ever changing destination on a bicycle. Why a bicycle you ask? A bicycle slows life down. Its a way to discover places you'd normally breeze past in a car. It's a means to take that road less traveled. As we enter a New Year, full of hope and promise, its important to look back on the many years passed and acknowledge those times each of us spent longing for adventure and in doing so, redefine what adventure really means. We've allowed the world to tell us adventure is thousands of miles away and can only be sought with a plan ticket and small pack of essentials. Yes, that's adventure but not the entire description. True adventure is disrupting the routine. Its choosing to act in an opposing manner to what your personality would normally allow. In short, adventure can be found anywhere you haven't been and for many of us that adventure doesn't require a plane ticket.
When you make plans for the coming year and think of the places you've always wanted to go, consider this - could adventure be riding your bicycle to a local restaurant on a beautiful summer day and sitting outside with a friend or loved one passing the day in engrossing conversation over excellent food and exotic wine. Could adventure be looking back on cold winter days when you had a trail, bike path or road all to yourself as you admired snow covered trees and the way the sun reflects in such a way you swear your dreaming. Could adventure be riding 5 miles further then you ever have before.
Be bold in this New Year. Find yourself in places you wouldn't normally look. And get there on your bike.
