:: THE DETAILS ::
Slow Roll Cleveland is kicking off its third season, and we've got a lot of friends along to help out the fun this time! We're partnering with University Hospitals to bring you a community bike fair before the ride. Bike Cleveland and Beat Cycles will also be on hand, and New Belgium will help us party after the ride in a location in nearby Uptown TBD.
We're going to a registration/membership system this year. Don't worry, Slow Roll will still be free for everyone. But bigger partners mean more lawyers are involved, and lawyers almost inevitably = paperwork. We'll ask everyone to fill out a waiver, which we'll keep on file, and issue you a membership card. You'll only have to fill out the waiver one time this year. We'll do the rest. There will be a donation on the form to donate to Slow Roll, including a VIP option that includes a t-shirt and a sticker, but it is absolutely not required.
Depending on the number of folks who turn out on May 1, registration could get a little tricky! Show up early and avoid the logjam: we'll be setting up a booth at 11 AM to begin greeting everyone. We'll ride as close to 1 PM as possible, and we hope to have an escort out of the immediate area.
Two hours free parking is available at the UH garage nearby, but there is also parking all around the University Circle area, so feel free to park wherever is convenient and ride your bike in. Bicycle parking will be provided courtesy of Ohio City Bicycle Co-op.
Here's a press release that describes what we're planning. It all takes place in the park in front of UH's Case Medical Center at 11100 Euclid Avenue:
University Hospitals (UH) will help Slow Roll Cleveland – Ohio’s biggest weekly bicycle ride – kick off its 2016 season with a bike-oriented festival on Sunday, May 1, 2016, just outside UH’s Case Medical Center campus on the corner of Euclid Avenue and UH Drive.
The wellness- and sustainability-themed fair will also boast assistance from Bike Cleveland, Lakewood’s Beat Cycles, and the Ohio City Bicycle Co-op, as well as a number of other exhibitors.
The fair will kick off at 11am and will precede Slow Roll’s opening day ride. Participants will be asked to register and sign a waiver at Slow Roll’s booth before the ride in order to take part in the approximately 10-mile, slow-paced bike ride, which will wind its way through the beautiful eastern neighborhoods surrounding University Circle. The ride will start at 1 p.m. and end approximately one-and-a-half hours later in the adjacent Uptown entertainment district for post-ride food and refreshments.
UH’s Rainbow Injury Prevention team will be on hand during the festival for safety demonstrations, helmet fitting and interactive education, and exercise physiologists from UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Healthy Kids program and UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute will lead interested cyclists in pre-ride stretching exercises.
Additionally, a Healthy Kids clinical dietitian will be present to offer healthy recipes and nutrition tips. UH’s Nutrition Services will provide tap water stations for filling water bottles, as well as contribute ingredients for Bike Cleveland’s blender bike, a human-powered smoothie station where attendees will be invited to burn some calories and make themselves a tasty treat at the same time.
Beat Cycles will have a bike check station set up for minor bike tweaks before the ride, and Ohio City Bike Co-op will provide bicycle parking next to the festival so that participants can walk around and take in the offerings.
